Bulk and Deep Excavations
Bulk and Deep Excavations
Earthworks are the unsung hero of our modern society. While praise is often given to the products of construction that are easily seen, the houses, skyscrapers, roads, and commercial buildings, none of these modern marvels would be possible without well-planned and executed earthworks.
New Zealand’s natural landscape presents an array of challenges for both commercial and residential development. The vast majority of the country is made up of uneven terrain with volcanic rock sprinkled through clay and soil and very rarely allows for construction to easily commence on top of it. Thankfully, Build2’s bulk and deep excavation services make it possible to continue to create new developments and increase New Zealand’s infrastructure.
What is Bulk Excavation?
Deep excavation and bulk excavation are terms used to describe the earthworks process of removing large amounts of rock, soil, or any other material to prepare a site for a construction project. This is often required for a range of different construction projects, including residential and commercial, and serves as a means to level out land in order for the foundation of developments to be laid. Due to the complicated nature of New Zealand’s unique terrain, this process can be particularly challenging. There is a large range of scenarios that will require bulk excavation, and in order to complete the task in a high quality and efficient manner, specialised equipment and an experienced team will be required in order to bring the site to a point where construction can begin.
Bulk and deep excavations are widely used in the construction of infrastructures such as roads, railroads, buildings, and car parks. This infrastructure is critical for New Zealand and is designed to be a long-term investment in the development of the country. Because these structures are expected to last for decades, it is vital that precise site cuts are made in order to bring the land to a level that is suitable for long-term foundations to be laid.
Build2’s Process for Bulk and Deep Excavation Process
Build2 places a major focus on mastering the most efficient methods and taking advantage of the latest technology and innovations to produce high-quality results. We take careful care with our earthworks services as we recognise how important this step in the construction process is.
We follow strict procedures in preparing a site with our earthworks services. This starts off with our team laying out corner standards and examining and recording the ground and top levels. We then assess the allowed depth excavation before covering the loose topsoil in order to develop the cut-off level. The next step is to create drainage for wells and interlating trenches. At this point, it is possible to develop the margins of the building as well as building the protection of the bounds.
Build2 has a reputation for following and adhering to all legal obligations to offer high-quality, industry-leading earthworks services.
Safety is Always a Priority
Build2 takes worksite safety very seriously. The nature of deep and bulk excavation means the moving of materials can pose a giant safety hazard if handled incorrectly. In order to keep all involved safe and sound, we follow our safety procedures down to the T at all times.
The first step in ensuring safety during excavations is to avoid underground services and ensuring that no surrounding structures are undermined. This can be done by using safe digging practises such as digging away from them. Each day we check the excavation site before work commences as well as after any event that may affect stability. At all times we ensure that there is safe access that allows workers to enter and exit the site.
Build2 never assumes the ground will stand unsupported and uses shores, benches, or batter backs to prevent the risk of any collapse. We equip sites with barriers to prevent both people and equipment from falling in, making sure that these barriers are heavy enough to prevent any accidents but also do not affect the structural integrity of the walls in the event one were to occur.
How Long Does Bulk and Deep Excavation Take?
There is a large range of variables that determine the length of time it takes to excavate a site in order for it to be ready to lay foundations. This includes the nature of the terrain – how uneven is it? What is the land made up of? Another factor is weather conditions and, of course, how large the project is. All these factors play a role and determine the overall time that will be required for leveling out the ground. While a home or a smaller building may be as quick as 3 or 4 days, a larger project (such as roads) can sometimes even take months.
How Much Does Deep or Bulk Excavation Cost?
Similar to the length of time that is required to excavate a site, the overall cost is going to be determined by the size and scope of the project. While a good ballpark estimate to use to help determine your budget is $65+GST per cubic meter of earth moved, this price may differ depending on the excavating scenario.
